Jonathan Cole, a professor at Columbia University best known for his scholarly work on the development of the sociology of science as a research specialty, spoke about his book, "The Great American University: Its Rise to Preeminence, Its Indispensable National Role, Why It Must Be Protected." Professor Cole's address was delivered at Dartmouth on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 @ 4:30 PM in the Rockefeller Center.

Jonathan Cole served as Columbia’s provost and dean of faculties for 14 years through 2003. His recent scholarly work has focused attention on questions of scientific and technological literacy, intellectual property and new digital media, and current problems facing research universities.
